Deliciously Simple Tiramisu for Two: Enjoy a Cozy Dessert Without Waste

Tiramisu is a classic dessert loved by many for its rich layers of creamy mascarpone, espresso-soaked ladyfingers, and a touch of liquor. Yet making a full pan often results in leftovers that go uneaten, contributing to food waste and extra calories. It can also be pricey when you only want a small treat. This recipe solves that by making tiramisu for two, perfect for a cozy night in or a special occasion without the guilt or waste.

You can prepare this dessert in your favorite glass, mug, or even a small mason jar. The ingredients are flexible, allowing you to use what you have on hand or what feels meaningful to you. Whether you substitute cream cheese for mascarpone or choose your preferred liquor, this recipe keeps things simple and affordable.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • ½ cup espresso (made from instant powder or a coffee machine)

  • 1 tablespoon rum, brandy, coffee liqueur, or any liquor you prefer

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • One package of ladyfingers

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • ¼ cup cream cheese or mascarpone

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Cocoa powder for dusting

Mascarpone is traditional and delicious, and is often available for under $5 at stores like Walmart or Aldi. Or you can substitute budget-friendly cream cheese instead. The choice of liquor is flexible—rum or brandy are classic, but feel free to use what you enjoy.

Sourcing These Ingredients

Ladyfingers

At Inflation Bites, we always begin by considering how to reduce the cost of a recipe or dish. The one ingredient you must have or make is crisp ladyfinger cookies. I find I get the best deal (just over $3, for a package that makes over 8 servings) at Amazon. Remember to seal your ladyfingers in a Ziplock bag so they stay crisp, and use them before they become stale.

Mascarpone Cheese

The best deals on mascarone are at Aldi, Walmart, or other discount grocery stores. Mascarpone cheese is wonderful, but once you open a tub, you must use it within 5-7 days. If you can't use it within this window, place the package in a quart-size zip-top freezer bag and freeze it for up to 4 months. It freezes beautifully for future use. You can also use it in pasta sauce or to enrich mashed potatoes. If you have a plan, nothing goes to waste!

Liquor

For liquor, use what you have on hand, or buy a one-shot bottle for a couple of bucks at the liquor store. You need such a small amount in this recipe, and you may find that you love Amaretto, Kahlua, or Bailey's Irish Cream. This is your tiramisu, so make it the way you like it. I usually have rum, and I always have brandy, so I will typically just use that.

Espresso, Cocoa, and Extras

For espresso, make it at home with a machine or use instant espresso powder. You can even order up a shot at Starbucks and bring it home. The dusting of cocoa can also be chocolate curls (made with a peeler and a chocolate bar). Or you can add chocolate chips. You can also add raspberries. This is your dessert, so feel free to customize it just as you like. How about orange liquor and candied orange slices?

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the espresso mixture: Combine the espresso, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of your chosen liquor in a small bowl. Stir until the sugar dissolves.

  2. Make the cream layer: In a medium bowl, beat the heavy cream, cream cheese (or mascarpone), powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. This will create a light, fluffy texture.

  3. Plan your serving containers: Choose your glasses, mugs, or small jars. Check the size of your ladyfingers and cut them if needed to fit the containers.

  4. Set up your assembly station: Place the espresso mixture, cream mixture, and ladyfingers (cut if necessary) within easy reach.

  5. Layer the dessert: Quickly dip one ladyfinger into the espresso mixture, flipping to coat both sides lightly without making it soggy. Place it at the bottom of your serving container. Repeat until the bottom is covered. Do this for both servings.

  6. Add cream and repeat: Spoon a layer of the cream mixture over the ladyfingers. Add a second layer of dipped ladyfingers, followed by another layer of cream. Finish with a final layer of dipped ladyfingers and top with the remaining cream.

  7. Dust with cocoa: Lightly sprinkle cocoa powder on top for that classic tiramisu look.

  8. Chill: Cover your containers with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour to let the flavors meld and the dessert set.

Tips for Making the Perfect Tiramisu for Two

  • Use strong espresso: The coffee flavor is key to tiramisu. As I said earlier, instant espresso powder is great if you don't have your own espresso machine..

  • Don’t over-soak ladyfingers: A quick dip on each side is enough. Over-soaking makes the dessert soggy.

  • Customize your liquor: If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute the liquor with more coffee or coffee-flavored syrup.

  • Choose your container wisely: Glasses or jars with straight sides make layering easier and look elegant.

  • Make ahead: This dessert tastes better after chilling, so prepare it a few hours in advance or even the night before.

Why Make Tiramisu for Two?

Making a smaller portion means you enjoy fresh tiramisu without leftovers that might go to waste. It also helps control portion size, reducing calorie intake while still allowing you to indulge in a rich dessert. This approach saves money by using fewer ingredients and avoiding the temptation to overeat. That said, it's up to you whether you want to make an extra serving or make it every day next week. It's good enough that you will want to.
