Every year, Aldi promotes Thanksgiving savings, and the 2026 amount to feed 10 people was under $40. This post shows you how to upgrade the Aldi plan for just $10 more. For under $50, you can skip the ultra-processed foods and make some easy homemade recipes.

*Don't shop at Aldi? Our Walmart Thanksgiving Upgrade will be posted shortly.

The InflationBites Thanksgiving Upgrade adds a few essentials and keeps the total under $50. That's right: you can serve 10-12 people a delicious homemade Thanksgiving with all Aldi ingredients for under $50. This is the real cost at the register—I didn't reduce it to reflect half a bag of potatoes or half a container of cream. If you have basic staples in your kitchen, it will cost that. If you have only a few staples, it will cost a bit more.

The best part is that most of this meal is make-ahead. The potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie can be made a day or two ahead. You must cook the turkey and gravy the day you serve Thanksgiving dinner, and prepare a fresh vegetable. But you can make everything else early so you can enjoy talking with relatives you barely see. No smirking. I saw that.

  • Cook the turkey with butter and herbs for extra flavor.

  • Make easy homemade Bread and Herb Stuffing with bistro bread, fresh herbs, onion, and celery. Assemble it the day before, then bake it while the turkey rests.

  • Use yellow potatoes to make rich, flavorful Mashed Potatoes with less butter and cream. Prepare them Thanksgiving morning and reheat just before serving.

  • Use the pan drippings to make 10-minute No-Lumps Turkey Gravy. We’ll share the secret to smooth, delicious gravy every time.

  • Make and bake Candied Sweet Potatoes a day ahead, then reheat them while the stuffing bakes.

  • Make fresh Cranberry Sauce with two ingredients plus water in under 30 minutes. Prepare it one or two days ahead.

  • Make a homemade Pumpkin Pie with butternut squash—it looks and tastes like an exceptional pumpkin pie. A prepared frozen deep-dish crust eliminates the fuss.

  • Include a fresh vegetable of your choice—green beans are a favorite—to cut through the richness with something fresh and bright.

  • Use prepared Hawaiian Rolls and Whipped Cream to make the day easier.

As you can see, this is a complete Thanksgiving dinner, and all the recipes are—or soon will be—available on InflationBites. Best of all, the plan spreads the cooking over the two days before Thanksgiving, leaving as little as possible to do on the holiday itself. You can spend time with your family, make memories, and stop stressing about the kitchen. Thanksgiving should be fun, and with a little planning, it can be.

Why This is the Ultimate Budget Thanksgiving

This plan includes links to our tried-and-true recipes, which will help you:

  1. Choose, thaw, and roast a flavorful turkey with herbs and butter—no more dry turkey.

  2. Prepare the stuffing and candied sweet potatoes one or two days ahead, then bake or reheat them on Thanksgiving Day. You can also make the pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce two days ahead.

  3. Make delicious herb stuffing with fresh bistro bread, plus smooth gravy from the turkey drippings.

  4. Use a few thoughtfully chosen prepared items to make the day easier without sacrificing the homemade feel.

Recipes for an Upgraded Aldi Thanksgiving

1. Turkey

Follow these instructions for choosing, thawing, and roasting your Turkey with Herbs and Butter:

If you are an overachiever, the recipe also includes instructions for dry-brining the turkey. However, your Aldi turkey should be ready to roast as-is.

2. Bread and Herb Stuffing

This recipe makes first-rate Bread and Herb Stuffing and includes variations for anyone who enjoys extra add-ins. It is easy to assemble one or two days ahead, then bake as soon as the turkey comes out of the oven.

3. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

Gravy pours over a bowl of mashed potatoes on a striped cloth, with wooden spoons nearby on a rustic tabletop.

These instructions show you how to make smooth mashed potatoes and no-lumps turkey gravy. Yellow potatoes create flavorful, creamy mashed potatoes, while the pan drippings become a classic gravy.

4. Candied Sweet Potatoes

This Fred Harvey classic never fails. With just three ingredients, you can make delicious candied sweet potatoes. Parboil the potatoes, bake them in a sugar glaze, and prepare them ahead for easy reheating on Thanksgiving Day. Brush them with butter before serving for a beautiful glaze.

5. (Squash) Pumpkin Pie

This may be the most wonderful pumpkin pie you will ever eat—and only you will know it is made with butternut squash. The squash adds rich flavor, and it is simple to prepare: cut it in half and bake until tender. Serve the pie with purchased whipped cream.

7. Fresh Green Beans

This is a hill I will defend: every Thanksgiving table needs something fresh. This budget and plan include a bag of fresh green beans. Steam them briefly, then season with butter, salt, and pepper. They add color and freshness to the table.

8. Hawaiian Rolls

Serve the meal with purchased Hawaiian rolls and butter.

Food Preparation Plan for Thanksgiving Meal

The secret to a successful Thanksgiving meal is to plan ahead and make things ahead. This way, you can enjoy your guests without being stuck in the kitchen.

Three Days Before

  • Move the turkey to the refrigerator to thaw.

Up to Two Days Before

  • Make the cranberry sauce and refrigerate it.

  • Bake the pie and refrigerate it.

Day Before

  • Assemble the stuffing up to the point of baking. Cover with foil and refrigerate.

  • Prepare and bake the candied sweet potatoes. Cover with foil and refrigerate.

Thanksgiving Day

  • Plan the turkey’s start time using the recipe’s cooking guidance, allowing it to come out of the oven 45 minutes to 1 hour before dinner.

  • Early in the day, peel the potatoes and place them in a pot of salted water. Later, boil and drain them, then mash and transfer to an oven-safe dish to reheat.

  • Trim the green beans and place them in a pot or steamer, ready to cook.

  • When the turkey is done, transfer it to a platter or cutting board, loosely cover it with foil, and let it rest.

  • Put the stuffing and sweet potatoes in the oven immediately.

  • Strain the pan drippings and make the gravy.

  • Steam the green beans, then drain and season them with butter, salt, and pepper.

  • Reheat the mashed potatoes in the oven.

  • Prepare the turkey for carving. Remove the stuffing, sweet potatoes, and mashed potatoes from the oven. Transfer the potatoes, gravy, and green beans to serving bowls; set out the cranberry sauce; and place the pie where everyone can admire your hard work. Serve the rolls with butter.

8 Essential Ways to Make Thanksgiving Dinner Special

  • Make the stuffing from scratch with white bread or cornbread, depending on your tradition. It is easy to prepare, and often everyone’s favorite. If you are a confirmed cheapskate like me, save stale bread in a freezer bag during the months before the feast.

  • Serve purchased rolls unless you are an avid baker.

  • Save time with a purchased pie crust, but take the time to bake the pie. Canned or prepared whipped cream is another smart shortcut.

  • Serve something fresh, such as green beans or a salad.

  • Make gravy with pan drippings and cornstarch. It is easy, inexpensive, and lump-free when you whisk the cornstarch into a cold slurry before adding it to the hot liquid.

  • Homemade cranberry sauce takes only a few minutes and three ingredients—and one of them is water. It also looks beautiful on the table.

  • Watch the turkey carefully, and do not stuff it. Bake the stuffing separately so you can remove the turkey before it dries out and overcooks.

  • Splurge on fresh herbs such as sage and thyme. They add wonderful flavor to the turkey, stuffing, and gravy—and make the house smell amazing.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all you hold dear this year!
